U.S. Senate Passes Dangerous Hate Crimes Law, President Promises Veto!

The Senate just voted 60-39 in favor of a Hate Crimes amendment that creates a special class of protection for victims of violent crimes who practice transgendered or homosexual behavior.  Although violent crimes should be punished severely, all victims deserve equal protection, not putting citizens in special classes.  Reports show, everywhere similar Hate Crimes laws have been passed they have led to violations of religious liberty, even leading to criminal charges against six Philadelphia activists at a pro-gay rally who held Biblical signs opposing homosexuality.  This amendment is a danger to free speech, equal protection and religious freedom in America.

The Kennedy-Smith Hate Crimes Amendment was just voted onto the defense spending bill, but President Bush has promised to veto any Hate Crimes laws!

ACTION: CALL PRESIDENT BUSH AND THANK HIM FOR HIS COMMITMENT!

Texas Leaders: Campaign Drop Outs and Judicial Breakthroughs

This past week, Texas gained surprising news from public officials on the campaign trail.  State Representative Kirk England of Grand Prairie announced last week that he is officially changing parties to run as a Democrat this next term, putting the House split at 79-70.  Representative Diane Delisi (Temple), House Public Health Committee Chairwoman and power Republican leader, also announced she will not run for office this next term.  On the national scene, President Bush's 5th Circuit Judicial Nominee Judge Jennifer Elrod last week was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Judge Elrod from Texas now awaits a Senate floor vote.  Please pray for Judge Elrod and her confirmation.

State Representative Paxton Opposes Government Misuse of Tax Dollars

A dispute brews in Texas over the construction of the TransTexas Corridor, and in the midst of the debate, the Texas Department of Transportation has taken up the role of public lobbying.  In an effort to persuade the public to their side, the government agency has spent bundles of dollars on advertising.  Where are the funds coming from?  These advertisements are paid for with your tax dollars, and are lobbying you to give more tax dollars for transportation projects.  Government lobbying is a misuse of tax dollars!  Thankfully, Representative Ken Paxton has just issued a request for an interim research committee on the use of tax dollars to advertise government programs.  CLICK HERE to read Paxton's statement on the issue.

Answer the Call: Christian Leaders in the Next Generation

As school takes off, students are deciding to take a public stand for Christian values in the face of an opposing culture.  Yesterday, as a part of the traditional See You at the Pole initiative, students from schools around the nation gathered at their flagpoles to pray.  We thank God that students in America have this freedom and we must be good stewards of it.  We are also thankful for student leaders willing to take a stand for their Christian beliefs.  In his eulogy to the late Dr. Ted Kennedy, Dr. James Dobson calls upon these youth to rise up and answer God's call on their lives.  CLICK HERE to listen.
