Charter Law 101

Catherine West, director of government and public relations with the Ohio Alliance for Public Charter Schools, John Tarako, consultant with the Ohio Department of Education's Office of Community Schools, and Chad Readler, partner in the law firm of Jones Day are teaming up to bring you a two hour charter law session.

Brought to your desktop, this Webinar will overview H.B. 79, H.B. 119 and will offer insight on what may appear on Ohio's political and legislative horizons.  For participating in this event, you will receive a reference document outlining the highlights of key community charter school legislation enacted into state law since 1997, a handy check list of state laws for which charter schools are exempt or not exempt and the opportunity to ask your burning charter law question.

As an OAPCS member, this Webinar is free, but registration is required.  If you know a non-member that would like to take part in this event, space is limited so make sure they send in their registration and the $75.00 non-member fee ASAP!

Test your charter law knowledge:
Based on the law description, are charter schools exempt or not exempt?

1.  Requirements related to the provision of life, health, accident and legal insurance benefits for school district employees

2.  Check writing and deposit requirements related to school treasures

3.  Requirements on retention of school records and establishing a records commission

How did you do?  Find out in our next edition of Insight Online...or register for the Charter Law 101 Webinar today!

We need your photos!

Your school ought to be in pictures!   And your school's pictures ought to be on our Web site!

The Ohio Alliance for Public Charter Schools is redesigning its Web site, and as part of its new look, we would like to highlight, over time, our member schools.  Please send us the best photos of your students, teachers and staff members so that we can begin to plan for their eventual incorporation into our Web site and brochures!

We're specifically looking for photos of teachers with students, photos of classroom instruction, work-study activities, field trips, plays or musical performances, as well as photos of students in other extracurricular activities.   Pictures of students where the school name is visible are especially welcome, as are photos of students in activities unique to the school's mission.   It's definitely a plus if students' and teachers' faces are prominent in the photos.   Please send digital photos, if possible, with a minimum of 300 dpi resolution.  Traditional print photos are also acceptable.

Since these pictures will be in the public domain, we need to be certain you have release forms signed by the students' parents or guardians.  Some schools ask parents to sign standard release forms at the beginning of each school year.  If your school doesn't follow this practice, please arrange for release forms to be signed by the parents or guardians of students whose photos you are sending to us.
One of the advantages of membership in the Ohio Alliance is that we will be proactive in promoting your school.   In April, we plan to launch a new school search map on our Web site, in which member schools will be prominently featured.   This should be a tremendous aid to parents who are searching for an appropriate charter school for their child.

Please send your photos to Kelly Woodard-Doty
at the Ohio Alliance for Public Charter Schools, Fifth Third Center, 21 East State Street - Suite 940, Columbus, Ohio   43215.
