Senator Headlines Chamber in Session

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions addressed a Chamber in Session/Rotary Club luncheon crowd at Indian Hills Country Club on May 27th. He talked about current issues being handled in Washington.

He said that escalating oil prices should be a wake-up call to embark on projects to free the nation from its dependence on foreign oil. He stressed the importance of finding new oil reserves, building nuclear plants and researching biofuels and wind and solar power. "I am hopeful we can agree on new nuclear power plants," he said. He pointed out that this is cost effective and really emits nothing into the atmosphere.

Sessions also said he recently met with Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who just returned from Iraq. "The situation in Iraq is far better than it has been," he said, explaining that the number of attacks on our troops as well as civilians per week has dropped dramatically. But he also cautioned that much remains to be done.

Addressing the economy, Sessions stated he is not sure that the U.S. has entered a recession in the technical sense. "Some parts of the country are worse than others...Alabama and especially the Tuscaloosa area is doing fine," he said, citing unemployment figures that prove the state and county are well below the national average.

Sessions is currently up for re-election.

Tuscaloosa Galleria Hosts Monumental Mixers

Tuscaloosa Galleria merchants graciously hosted our May after hours networking event.  The setting and refreshments were enjoyed by all.  We'd like to point out that the Galleria also played host to our very first after hours mixer in the early 1980s.  The center is as lovely and successful today as it was back then.  Some of us have changed a bit!

Colonial Pipeline Company Proposes Alabama Expansion

Colonial Pipeline Company is a carrier of petroleum products and delivers a daily average of 100 million gallons of gasoline, kerosene, aviation fuel, diesel fuel and national defense fuel to communities and businesses throughout the southern and eastern US. The 5,500-mile system transports these fuels from refineries in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to 267 marketing terminals in 13 Southeastern and Eastern Seaboard states.

Colonial is proposing to add an additional pipeline from Jackson, Louisiana, to Austell, Georgia, that would run alongside the two current main lines to the extent possible. In addition, as Colonial expands pipeline capacity, additional tanks will be needed on each end. The proposed pipeline is needed as a result of demand to transport increased production from announced Gulf Coast refinery expansions. Colonial's Project ExCEL, a proposed 460-mile pipeline expansion, representing a more than $2 billion investment, would provide additional capacity for Colonial to continue providing a safe and reliable energy source for decades to come.
Currently, Colonial is moving forward to obtain permits from federal and state agencies. The permitting process involves close scrutiny and review of the pipeline design and proposed route. Comprehensive environmental analyses will be conducted as the route is finalized. Interested community members will be able to participate in the evaluation process, and these opportunities are TBA. Colonial anticipates being able to begin construction in 2010. If all local, state and federal approvals are received, they expect the project to be completed by 2012. For more info, call 800.275.3004 x 2524, email info@colpipe.com or visit www.colonialprojectexcel.com.
