Pritchett-Moore and Huntington Place Elementary Kick Off the Year

Huntington Place Elementary faculty started off the new school year with lunch provided by Pritchett-Moore, Inc.  The teachers were treated to good food and conversation by employees of Pritchett-Moore, Inc.  One of this year’s partnership activities involves talking to the students about positive character traits.  Each week a different character trait, such as honesty, fairness and courage, will be featured at Huntington Place Elementary.  Realtors from Prudential Pritchett-Moore have been videotaped reading about certain character traits and then giving examples that relate to the character trait.  The videos will be broadcast throughout the school year.

On November 14th, Huntington Place Elementary and Pritchett-Moore will host their first run/walk to raise funds for the completion of a computer lab and other educational needs for the students.  The “Huntington Place 5K for Kids” event will be held at Huntington Place Elementary and corporate sponsorships are available.  The registration fee for the event is $20.  The race will begin at 8:00 am and pre-registration will begin at 7:00 am.  For more information contact Huntington Place Elementary, 205-342-2652.

Phifer Incorporated Helps Teachers at Westlawn Middle

With proration and funding cuts this school year, supplies for teachers have become increasingly sparse.  Phifer, Inc. was able to help the teachers at Westlawn Middle School by distributing six cases of copy paper and dry erase markers.  The teachers and even the students were thankful for the extra help.  Phifer also gave all new faculty and staff members goody bags filled with essential supplies in one of the famous “Phifer” bags.  Staying healthy and fit is very important for educators and Phifer is helping Westlawn educators do just that by providing membership to Phifer’s workout facility.

Nucor Places First with Charity Run

The article below was written by Cody Frederick, an 11th Grade student at Holt High School.

The air is brisk, the breeze, refreshing. In spite of the early hour, and the persistent darkness, you can already feel warmth and humidity. That’s Alabama weather for you. The first runner of the day arrives, a young girl, father in tow.

An hour later, it’s almost too crowded to move.

Thus is the (happy) fate of the 2009 Nucor 5K Walk/Run, an annual charity event established three years ago, with this year’s proceeds going to the Holt High School Athletic Department. The marathon, a three-mile track that goes from the intersection above Holt High School to Nucor Steel, up hills, past Holt Baptist Church, and back, consists of both a race, for which prizes were given, and a standard walk. Following the Walk/Run, door prizes, donated by businesses in and around the Holt community, were given out.

The Walk/Run took place on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 7:00 a.m. at Holt High School. The overall male Winners included Owen Bradley in 1st, Zac Cook 2nd, and Jeff Clark in 3rd, while the top female winners were Anallisa Patrick in 1st place, Kolson Lamb in 2nd, and Sara Gibson in 3rd. There was also a “Masters” category with one female and one male winner, Frannie James, and Glenn Dodd respectively.

Principal Neal Guy, Adopt-A-School committee members Judy Watkins and Sandra Tittle, and all of the students, faculty, and community friends of Holt High School would like to thank Nucor and all of its representatives for their hard work and many hours of service in preparing this successful event.

Rite Aid and Walker Elementary Develop New Activities

Rite Aid Distribution Center and Walker Elementary have been Adopt-A-School partners for eight years. The partnership is very excited about the different ways they will be involved together this year. Walker plans to celebrate Rite Aid employees birthdays each quarter with a different dessert for them to enjoy. Rite Aid donated much needed supplies for the nurse’s station at Walker. In addition, Rite Aid employees plan to visit Walker the third Thursday of every month to read with the students and to provide “duty free lunch” time for the teachers.  Walker teachers recently traveled to Rite Aid and helped judge their Safety Bulletin boards and both teachers and Rite Aid employees look forward to a productive school partnership!
