Read for the Record
| |
Thursday, October 8th was the day to read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. The date was the 40th anniversary of the book and Eric Carle's 80th birthday. Organized nationally b y the Jumpstart program, the “Read for the Record” campaign featuring “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” was organized to set a new world record for the greatest number of people reading the same book on the same day.
According to Jumpstart, in America today, one in three children arrives at the first day of school unprepared to learn, due primarily to economic inequality. The goal of the “Read for the Record” campaign was to highlight the importance of early involvement and the role everyone can play every day in the lives of at-risk preschoolers.
Locally, Sam and Teresa Davis, owners of Learning Experiences, Inc., invited the public to participate in the “Read for the Record Campaign.” A group of students from Faucett-Vestavia Elementary School, community leaders and special guests participated at Learning Experiences. Ruth Gaddis from The United Way's "Success by Six" was the guest reader and participants not only heard the book, but were also invited to take part in activities celebrating the book and the transformation of the hungry caterpillar into a butterfly. |

Englewood Elementary and West Alabama Bank Provide Help to TES
| |
The students and staff at Englewood Elementary along with West Alabama Bank held a canned food drive for Temporary Emergency Services (TES) the last week of September. The students at Englewood brought in over 2,500 cans and non-perishable items to give to TES. West Alabama Bank collected an additional 350 cans at their three locations. Englewood homerooms held a competition for the most items collected and the winning 3rd grade (Mrs. Shari Taylor's class), 4th grade (Mrs. Stormie Walker's class) and 5th grade (Mrs. Kelly Beverely's class) classes received a pizza party provided by West Alabama Bank. Englewood student council officers and representatives organized the cans and items daily and boxed them up for TES. TES Case Manager, Sharon Cosby, picked up the cans from the school. She was overwhelmed with the amount collected and said that many families in the area would benefit from this effort. “The 72 + boxes will not all fit in our food pantry, but that is a good problem to have,” stated Ms. Cosby. |

Huntington Place Elementary Hosts 5K for Kids
| |
Huntington Place Elementary will host a 5K for Kids on Saturday, November 14 at 8:00 am. The run will begin at the front of the school and anyone is eligible to participate. Funds raised from the run will go toward the completion of a computer lab along with other educational needs throughout the school.
Since the school will not be receiving any classroom funds from the state this year, Principal Debbie Benson felt that this would be a good way to raise money for the school's technology and research needs. "Economic pressure is hitting all of us and schools are being affected," said Benson. "In spite of these conditions, we feel our students deserve the best learning environment we can provide."
There will be several categories that will be divided up into age groups for the event. There will also be a separate wheelchair division. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded for every age group, including the wheelchair division. Benson is seeking sponsorship for the event. Corporate sponsorship costs $250.00 and the donation is tax deductible.
The entry fee is $20.00 and the first 150 participants registered will receive a t-shirt. Pre-registration is available at Huntington Place Elementary. Registration will also be available at 7:00 am on November 14 before the run begins. For more information, contact Debbie Benson at (205) 342- 2652. |
