More Marine Protected Areas on the way?
|
|
| |
From Rob Tobeck:
The first step towards an extensive series of Marine Protected Areas was taken by the Washington State Legislator in March of this year. For now it is being called Marine Spatial Planning which according to SSB 6350 Final Bill Report means," Marine spatial planning is a process through which compatible human uses are objectively and transparantly allocated to appropriate ocean areas to sustain critical ecological, economic, and cultural services for future generations".
While this sounds relatively harmless on the surface, when you think about what this general language could lead to, it becomes a bit scary for the recreational fisherman.
Our first opportunity to weigh in is now. The Department of Ecology is seeking public input through an online survey. Please take a few minutes to fill this out to make sure that policy makers understand how important recreational fishing is in our marine areas.

North Olympic Peninsula Chapter Volunteers
|
|
| |
President John Albiso reports that three chapter members, nominated by CCA Washington, have volunteered to participate in the WDFW Western Straits Focus Group. The group is responsible for providing guidance on the development of new management alternatives and objectives for recreational and commercial marine fish fisheries in waters stretching from the mouth of the Sekiu River west to the Bonilla-Tatoosh line in Marine Area 4 (Neah Bay).
The volunteers are Don Stucker of Sequim who is a retired Fish and Game Officer from Idaho. Al Gross of Port Angeles, a recreationsal fisherman who has fished the straits for over 20 years, and Roy Morris of Seiku, who is a fishing guide and a charter boat skipper. Roy is already a member of North Pacific Coast Marine Resource Advisory Committee with the WDFW, Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.
CCA encourages members to become volunteer participants on advisory boards and commissions such as these across the state.
