CCA Seeks Fairness in Crab Harvest

Changes to the seasons and rules for future recreational crabbing may be made later this year by the WDFW Commission.  The sustainable harvest of crab brings in over $23 million to Washington State.  Over 50% of this is derived from the recreational sector, while in the past only 10% of Washington’s harvestable crabs (coastal and Puget Sound combined) are allocated to recreational crabbers.

CCA has been actively involved with recommending changes that favor increasing the recreational portion of the harvest.   It is anticipated that crab issues will be one of the agenda topics for the August 6-7 Commission meeting.

Information about Puget Sound recreational crabbing, including a 1995 Circuit Court allocation decision, can be read here.

Topics to be discussed include:  hatchery reform, hatchery production, steelhead genetic study, nutrient enhancement, juvenile collection, fishery & conservation values, recycling -- just to name a few.

As an Advisory Group member, Dale welcomes suggestions from CCA members regarding future management of the Cowlitz River.   Send yours to Dale at:     dale@geierglove.com

  Miscellaneous
  From CCA Houston, July 16th

Ted Venker, CCA Communications Director, said:  “Today Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida introduced S.3594, the Fishery Conservation Transition Act (FCTA), which is designed to give federal marine fisheries managers the time, resources and more specific direction necessary to address the chronic deficiencies in data collection and science that have been plaguing federal fisheries.”

This amendment to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act has additional objectives including mitigating the economic impact of the transition to sustainable fisheries on fishing communities.
