Today, Republicans elected Representative Beth Harwell of Nashville as their nominee for House Speaker. Earlier this month, Republicans picked up 14 seats in the lower chamber of the General Assembly to give them a 64-34 advantage over the Democrats. As the strong majority party, it is a foregone conclusion that she will be elected Speaker by the whole House in January.
The other leadership positions such as Speaker Pro Tem, Majority Leader, Caucus Chairman and Whip will be elected at a caucus meeting in December. As for Senate Republicans, they will elect leadership in December, as well.
Democrats are reportedly considering meeting the week of December 13th to elect their leadership. |
