RoseMarie Swanger have introduced H.B. 64 and H.B. 694 to make English the official language of the state and encourage immigrants to get on the road to English learning. H.B. 64 and H.B. 694 would make English the official language of Pennsylvania, reducing government multilingualism and returning state agencies to their rightful role of promoting English by doing business in English. To date, 30 states have recognized the unifying power of English by making it the official language of the state. At a time when the number of limited English speakers in Pennsylvania is growing, it is imperative that we take steps to encourage English learning and reduce government multilingualism by passing H.B. 64 and H.B. 694. By making English the official language, the Pennsylvania legislature will be providing a common sense language policy to guide newcomers for today and for the future. Under both H.B. 64 and H.B. 694, government documents will be printed in our common language of English. The bill is carefully drawn to comply with federal law and legal precedent, and leaves agencies the flexibility to address emergencies and the needs of the justice system. A 2006 poll of Pennsylvanians found that 77 percent of likely voters support legislation to make English the official language.
