Support H.R. 764 to Reduce Multilingual Ballot Requirements

On Jan. 28, 2009, Rep. Dean Heller introduced legislation to remove many of the costly and divisive multilingual ballot provisions. Under H.R. 764, the American Elections Act of 2009, requirements for voting materials and ballot materials would be limited to English, Native American languages and Native Alaskan languages.

Since the U.S. government began forcing the provision of multilingual ballots in 1975, many have questioned the need for election materials in languages other than English. Since one must be a citizen in order to vote, and immigrants must demonstrate English proficiency in order to attain citizenship, ballots in languages such as Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese appear to be poor public policy.

Last year, a similar bill had more than 50 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. Click below to contact your Representative in Congress in support of H.R. 764.
