WEB ALERT Support Legislation to Determine the Cost of Government Multilingualism For years, people have debated the cost of doing government business in languages other than English. The Canadian government says it spends three cents per Canadian per day to do business in both of Canada’s official languages, which would mean that the U.S. could conceivably spend more than $3 billion annually for services in just one additional foreign language. To determine the true cost of providing services in languages other than English, Rep. Virginia Foxx has introduced H.R. 1414, the Multilingual Services Accounting Act. H.R. 1414 would require government agencies to disclose these expenditures in their annual accountability reports, giving the nation’s taxpayers a clear and separate indication of how much of their tax dollars are being wasted on government multilingualism.
