Americans may diverge on their views of immigration policy, but there is little argument about the need for encouraging English language learning among new residents of our country. S. 991 provides the policy for that ideal, promoting English learning by limiting multilingual government to specific situations. Doing government business overwhelmingly in English will reduce the cost of government as well as promote greater economic opportunity for all Americans. Numerous polls have found that more than 80 percent of Americans support making English the official language of the United States, including majorities of Democrats, Republicans and Independents.
