Senate passes bill reforming state's sex ed laws!
In a major victory for Tennessee’s families, on Thursday the state Senate passed Senate Bill 3310 by a 29-1 vote. The bill, brought to the legislature by our legislative arm, Family Action of Tennessee, would reform the state’s dysfunctional sex ed laws and make it clear that schools are to focus on abstinence and not promote, encourage, or condone sexual activity among young people.  Its counterpart, House Bill 3621, goes before the House Education Committee on Tuesday. Learn more about SB 3310/HB 3621 and watch the latest news on this bill in the Video of the Week.
New study shows that abstinence-centered sex ed programs work
A new study of over 1,000 ninth graders in Georgia shows that abstinence-centered sex ed programs reduce sexual activity and increase pro-abstinence beliefs and attitudes among teens.

Effort to repeal last year's victory for private businesses fails
In another positive development, the Senate State and Local Government Committee defeated a bill to repeal House Bill 600 that was signed into law last year.  HB 600, also brought to the legislature by Family Action of Tennessee, prohibited local governments from imposing on private sector businesses nondiscrimination policies that go beyond the protected classes covered under state and federal law.  Read more here.
Bill protecting displays of historically significant documents, including the Ten Commandments, goes to governor
A bill that allows municipalities to display replicas of historically significant documents, including the Ten Commandments, has passed the state legislature and is before Governor Haslam for his signature. If a lawsuit over the bill’s constitutionality is eventually filed and the bill is upheld, compliance with the law might keep cities and counties from being hauled into court as has occurred in the past.
Barna survey: evangelical support for Obama doubles in past 3 years
A fascinating survey by the Barna Group reveals how Christians currently view the Republican presidential candidates and President Obama.  It noted that “one of the most striking changes ... is that if evangelicals wind up supporting the eventual candidates in November in numbers consistent with their current preferences, Mr. Obama will receive double the support from the evangelical community he garnered four years ago.” The survey also found that President Obama “drew more support from mainline [Protestant] adults than did Mr. Gingrich and ran even with Mr. Romney” versus non-mainline Protestants. (Editor’s note: FACT is a nonpartisan organization and takes no position in favor of or opposed to any political candidate.)
Vanderbilt's "all-comers" policy: it's really about forcing orthodox Christianity off campus
Vanderbilt Chancellor ZepposAl Mohler explains that Vanderbilt’s “nondiscrimination” policy being applied to Christian student organizations has nothing to do with nondiscrimination but everything to do with eliminating all final vestiges of Christianity from its campus, as shown by its defense of the most discriminatory and exclusivist student organizations on its campus, fraternities and sororities.

Mississippi could become the first abortion-free state
The Mississippi state Senate and House have approved legislation that requires abortion practitioners to have admitting practices at a local hospital.  Opponents of the bill admit that if signed by the governor, it could result in the closure of the last remaining abortion facility in the state.
City tries to compel pastor to sign indemnity agreement before allowing him to speak near mosque
A pastor who had filed an application to speak outside a mosque with the city of Dearborn, Michigan -- reported to be home to the largest Muslim concentration in the U.S. -- was told by the city that he’d first have to sign a “hold harmless” and indemnity agreement.  Fortunately, a federal judge ruled that the city’s requirement was “clearly an unconstitutional clause which impedes [the pastor’s] First Amendment right to free speech and assembly.”
