  This Week's Viewpoint
So You Think Nobody Cares? Commentary by David Fowler
I recently spoke with a key legislator about a very important piece of legislation – a proposed amendment to our state constitution that actually deals with the very structure of our government.  There aren’t too many legislative proposals that do that.

But he was of the opinion that this issue wasn’t really important to voters, that it was just a blip on the radar screen of issues voters care about.  I think he’s wrong.

The issue is whether legislators should put on the ballot for your approval an amendment to the state constitution that would forever eliminate the opportunity for you....  Read more.

Knoxville's mayor proposes special protections for sexual orientation and gender identity
Knoxville’s mayor wants the city to add special protections for sexual orientation and gender identity to its nondiscrimination policy for city employees. The proposed ordinance is up before the City Council this Tuesday night, April 17th, during its regularly scheduled meeting that is open to the public.
Religious liberty protection for college students moving through legislature
On Wednesday, the House Education Committee approved House Bill 3576. The bill, brought to the legislature by our legislative arm, Family Action of Tennessee, will ensure that Tennessee’s public colleges and universities cannot discriminate against religious student groups. But with Vanderbilt University collecting $24 million of your state tax dollars, some state legislators are thinking that your money shouldn't be given to a rich university that has singled out such groups for discriminatory treatment and maybe it should be included, too. Learn more about SB 3597/HB 3576.

Senate Bill 893, the Teacher Protection Academic Freedom Act, becomes law!
By neither signing nor vetoing Senate Bill 893, another bill brought to the legislature by Family Action of Tennessee, Governor Haslam has allowed it to become law. The bill states that schools should endeavor to create an environment “that encourages students to explore scientific questions, learn about scientific evidence, develop critical thinking skills, and respond appropriately and respectfully to differences of opinion about scientific subjects required to be taught under the curriculum framework developed by the state board of education.” Read FACT’s Press Release here.
Day of Dialogue on Thursday, April 19th
Focus on the Family’s “Day of Dialogue” is this coming Thursday, April 19th, the day before GLSEN’s “Day of Silence.” The Day of Dialogue encourages open dialogue among students on topics like sexuality, bullying, and gender identity and for Christian students to articulate their biblical perspective in a Christ-centered, loving manner. GLSEN, the leading homosexual activist group in schools, says its “Day of Silence” is intended “to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools.” But it also calls for students to “plan a rally at your school, facilitate a workshop for students and teachers about LGBT issues or throw a party with your GSA” (Gay-Straight Alliance).  See video of GLSEN’s activities in one school.
Planned Parenthood holding 40 Days of Prayer for abortion
Planned Parenthood never ceases to amaze in how low it will stoop to promote its pro-abortion agenda -- and the millions of dollars it makes from being the largest abortion provider in the country. Imitating the “40 Days for Life” pro-life campaigns, a Planned Parenthood affiliate is promoting 40 days of prayer for abortion.
Promoting abortion more important to federal agency than stopping sex trafficking?
Re-authorization by Congress of funds to combat sex trafficking, routinely passed with bipartisan support in past years, is being held up because the Department of Health and Human Services has started denying anti-trafficking grants to faith-based groups that don’t refer victims for abortions.

Obama campaign opposes marriage amendment; LGBT Super PAC created to support campaign
While President Obama is publicly holding to his position that his views on same-sex marriage are “evolving,” his re-election campaign is again opposing a ballot measure to adopt a state constitutional amendment that would limit marriage to a man and a woman. Not surprisingly, a new Super PAC formed by homosexual activists has been created to support his campaign.
Attention, golfers: winner of Masters Tournament tweets for God
Bubba Watson, the winner of the Masters Tournament, tweets for God and engages in a weekly Bible study with fellow golfers. While Watson describes himself as "Christian. Husband. Daddy. Pro Golfer.” and thanked his “Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ” when given the green jacket, the local media failed to mention his Christian faith.
