New bill on school discipline introduced to Senate

First of all, teachers do not make disciplinary decisions regarding suspensions--those decisions are made by building and district-level administrators.

Secondly, the majority of our country's schools are not failing. Read the results of the NAEP tests--these have been going up every year for the past few decades especially among students on the bottom end of the achievement gap spectrum. Graduation rates have also been on the rise. Unfortunately, current testing trends in public schools are poised to stop the rise in education. These testing trends stem from a political posturing aimed at bringing down public education. The powerful and influential minds behind the testing culture are not educators--they are politicians and powerful private citizens whose own children are not subjected to this type of test environment. Instead, their children enjoy a rich curriculum in an environment of academic freedom. "Other people's children" deserve to be tested to death and their teachers demoralized while their schools are closed according to them.

The so-called "failing schools" narrative is a political position to dismantle public schools and segregate the population into those fortunate enough to be white and middle to upper class--who will be given access to an education--and those who had the "audacity" to be born as minorities and/or in poverty--who will be tested to death while politicians self-appoint their corporate friends to run their schools into the ground, deem them "failing" under their test-results driven regulations, and then close them so that for-profit companies can swoop in as "saviors" skimming off the best students, making CEO-worthy salaries, and leaving out the students whose academic dispositions would cause them to test poorly...all on the taxpayers' dime.

The real horror in education is the "test 'em, blame 'em, close 'em, and keep 'me out but pay me with YOUR tax money" scheme in which politicians on both sides of the aisle engage. THEY are the true problem-people in education.

The obnoxiousness of the teacher-bashers who are here patting each other on the back for such nonsensical comments is only trumped by the ignorance behind such comments. Perhaps getting the real story from doing a little research might inform wiser commentary from those with so much passion. Maybe it's just easier to get on the "blame the teacher" bandwagon than to take the responsibility of educating oneself on the issues?

Yeah...rights, here we go again, TALK<TALK<TALK...lets just talk about it as the parents take no accountability for the childrens actions. And in the time being these children are growing up in a more violent world where their actions with toy guns, guns made out of paper, pop tarts, legos are getting worse and worse AND THE PARENTS THINK IT IS CUTE ! It is NOT, I am a caregiver and do not promote ANY violent toys, swords made out of legos, paper, food etc.. There was a time when I allowed the children to do this thinking oHHHHH a good imagination, only to witness these children being vilent towards one another, the language was mouth dropping and play time became chaos ! So cry me a river, but a child gets enough violence at home from parents who allow them to play the adult rated games on the computers, ipods, ipads...the violence with the super hero movies and so much more. I hope the new bill NEVER passes and teachers/ schools stick to the policy implimented when guns were being brought to school.

The problem is not with the young children. The problem is with the school staff. These people should be banned from all contact with children. Any solution should be aimed at better screening of staff. Leave the children out of it. They're not the problem. Any such an evaluation, suspension, or entry in a permanent record should trigger an investigation of all staff involved. That's what happens when law enforcement is involved in a shooting. Even if it looks justified they are suspended pending an investigation. That's what should happen here. Hold them accountable.

So glad I grew up in the time we could play cowboys and Indians, with our toy guns and fake bows and arrows. None of us grew up to be a mad dog killer of innocent people, or became terrorists. Oh for the good old days when we could trust our teachers to teach, not find fault in what children do. Also wish we could have the great leaders of our country from back then. You could feel safe, not locking up everything you have, and having to be armed to protect yourself from those who obtain their guns and ammo through theivery, outright robbery or off the black market. Our entire society stays on edge bacause of the political game that our leader is playing. I thank God that I know most of us is in His hands. God help the ignorant, who believe that Big Daddy Gubmint will save them.

I understand the Senator's goal, and I share his frustration, but new legislation is not the solution. Sweeping reform of our public education system is closer to what is needed.

A person stupid enough to suspend a small child from school for chewing a pop-tart into the shape of a gun -- deliberately or not -- is a person far too stupid to be working as a teacher -- of anything, to anyone, at any time.

A person smart enough to be a teacher would understand that one of the primary reasons recent mass shootings have involved schools is the fact that our "betters" in government have widely declared schools in general to be "gun-free zones." An honest bank robber once was asked why he picked on banks. "That's where the money is," he replied. An honest psychopath might be asked why he picks on schools. I'll bet he'd say, "That's where the easy targets are."

This is not unlike the inquisition and punishment for heresy. It is this type of psychological warfare that Eric Holder spoke about when he made the case for “brainwashing” young people against guns to school administrators in the 90’s.

When the teachers impose irrational restrictions on their students or indoctrinate them with progressive ideology it should be treated as if they were proselytizing for a religion. This is not allowed and those who do this should be fired.

I know a teacher who tells the students that the founders were terrorists and that criminality among minorities is justified because of slavery and past discrimination. She is recruiting members for her progressive church and abusing her position as a teacher. We need to put a stop to this evil.

We do not need to re-evaluate how kids are punished, we need to evaluate how we think. When you can't even comprehend that a "school teacher", one lone individual is making a judgement on what they "SUBJECTIVELY THINK" and apply disciplinary is DANGEROUS! And what if a teacher is paranoid and starts "thinking" a child's artwork looks like a gun but is really their attempt at drawing a flower? Or the teacher is mentally ill and sees guns everywhere? What if they see a gun in the clouds? Common sense is gone because of liberal mental illness. Geese, aren't you glad I'm not the U.S. Attorney General.

Geez, finally someone whom is acting like an adult.
I read the stories of the children being suspended from school
almost on a daily basis and it makes you wonder if someone
has opened the doors to the asylum and let everyone out.

Todays teachers are failing to teach our children all across the nation. Just ask you child in school, of almost any age or grade who was John Paul Jones, what is the Gettysburg Address, and you sure better check on your childs reading ability and comprehension. Just yesterday a major story broke over the fact that 80+% of New York City graduates from high school cannot read and must take additional classes on reading, math and English in order to enter a Junior College!
Yet our teachers find time for this kind of foolishness of suspending a 7 year old child because he "chewed his pastry into the shape of a firearm".
Yes the threats of another Newtown CT remains fresh in all of our minds; and yes we want to do everything reasonable to prevent another occurance of that horror. But the key word here is "REASONABLE"!
Not obama's kind of "resonable" which is just sheer lunacy; but how about enforcing trhe laws that are already on the books. Chicago has an average of 500 shootings of school age children every year; Chicago with the most restrictive firearms laws in the nation has by far the most fatal shootings and woudings of children by firearms, yet those in control of Chicago, Democrats, do NOT ENFORCE THEIR OWN LAWS.....THEY TOTALLY IGNORE CHICAGO AND THE HORRORS THERE.
Now led by obama and Feinstein they want the same kind of restrictive and USLESS LAWS PASSED ACROSS OUR NATION.

All they are doing is riding a glory horse of publicity and taking advantage of the tragedy of Newtown CT.
Why dont they enforce those most restrictive laws?
Why dont the go on Facebook and see the thousands of gangbangers fiipping the bird while holding an illegal firearm with illegal magazines?
Why do they continue to ignore Chicago while whipping up a frenzy over more laws they refuse to enforce?

Yes it is a time for action; a time to enforce those laws no in effect; a time to rid our schools of teachers who do not teach, teachers who suspend babies for chewing pastry into the shape of a firearm.

What good are more laws when our lawmakers turn their collecitve backs on chicago where Newtown CT happens every month or every year and has been doing so for over a decade???
