2020 Medicare Payments Under Attack
The 2020 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule includes hard-fought provisions that make much-needed increases in payment levels for family physicians. The increases in payments for evaluation and management (E/M) codes, along with the development of primary care add-on codes, will result in a 12% increase in payments for family physicians starting in 2021. The AAFP fought hard for these provisions and now some physician organizations are seeking to prevent their implementation.
We need your help.
The AAFP urges you to reach out to your Members of Congress and urge them to protect Medicare beneficiaries access to timely, comprehensive primary care by supporting the much-needed increases in primary care payments that were included in the recently-released Medicare physician fee schedule. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) appropriately recognized that current evaluation and management (E/M) services are undervalued and acknowledges the need for positive investment in primary care. Efforts underway to reverse this progress and return to a focus on costlier, specialty care are real and it is time for family medicine to speak out. Congress needs to tell CMS that they stand in support of Medicare beneficiaries and these investments in primary care.
