Increase Medicare Reimbursements for DXA Scans
Since 2007, reimbursements for dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans have been declining. Current reimbursements have fallen to $40 per scan nationally and without a fix from Congress, this rate is likely to continue to decrease. DXA scans are an important tool for the orthopedic care team to use to combat osteoporosis in women and men over the age of 65. Tell Congress to raise the reimbursements for these tests to allow our practices to continue to provide these needed scans to our patients.

50% of women and men who fracture a hip due to osteoporosis either die within a year of their fracture or live the rest of their lives in a nursing home. These are avoidable deaths and disruptions to life for our senior citizens. Congress can easily fix the current lack of access to DXA testing by revising the reimbursement statute.
