Currently, federal employees and postal workers who are injured on the job cannot receive treatment provided and overseen by a PA when using federal workers compensation coverage. This long-outdated restriction unnecessarily limits federal workers’ access to quality medical care provided by PAs and can disrupt continuity of, and timely access to, care, potentially delaying federal workers’ return to work after an injury.
S. 3296/H.R. 3170 would modernize the Federal Employees Compensation Act (FECA) to allow injured federal employees to receive care that is provided and overseen by PAs and NPs. This legislation passed the House of Representatives on an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote in 2022, and was voted out of Committee unanimously in 2024, but did not achieve final passage in either the 117th or 118th Congresses. With the bill now scheduled to be considered in the 119th Congress, all PAs are urged to ask Members of Congress to support this important legislation once again.
