The Promoting Access to Diabetic Shoes Act, S.1805/H.R. 1616, has been re-introduced in Congress by Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and by Reps. Darin LaHood (R-IL) and Nanette Barragan (D-CA). The legislation will authorize PAs to certify the need for Medicare patients to obtain therapeutic shoes for patients with diabetes. Take action today by contacting your legislator to urge them to cosponsor S. 1805/H.R. 1616.
Current law and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations do not authorize PAs to order diabetic shoes. With the aging U.S. population and prevalence of diabetes, it is absurd that PAs can manage a patient’s diabetes and other complex chronic conditions but are not currently recognized by Medicare to order diabetic shoes.
For Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes who receive care from a PA, S. 1805/H.R. 1616 will provide timely access to needed therapeutic shoes.
Urge your legislators to support this crucial legislation to ensure PAs are recognized to provide better, full-spectrum care to patients with diabetes.
Thank you for your advocacy in action!
