H.2175, An Act Relative to Medical Physics, sponsored by Rep. Sean Garballey, is pending before the Committee on Health Care Financing. The Committee has thirty days to act on the bill.
This bill will create a Board of Registration in Medical Physics to license and regulate medical physicists in the Commonwealth. H.2175 is important due to the key role that medical physicists serve in the delivery of high quality, accurate, safe, and effective radiation for therapies and diagnosis. It is in the best interests of patients to ensure that all practicing medical physicists are appropriately trained, educated, board certified, and licensed to practice in Massachusetts.
According to AAPM Policy PS 11-A, "AAPM supports and endorses programs such as licensure and registration which: define the authorized scope of practice of clinical medical physics; require medical physicists to hold and maintain certification from an appropriate board, engage in appropriate continuing education, and adhere to established standards of ethics and professionalism; and provide due process for revocation of the license or registration."
