The Substance Use Prevention and Pharmacy Oriented Recovery Treatment Prescription Act (SUPPORT Rx) would increase access to lifesaving addiction services provided by pharmacists working under collaborative practice agreements.
Specifically, the legislation requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to initiate a 3-year demonstration program which will award grants to eligible entities to establish, maintain, or improve a pharmacy-based addiction care program.
Grants can be used for:
- Offering evidence-based medication treatments for opioid/substance disorders that can be accessed through same-day services.
- Training pharmacists on treating and managing patients with opioid and other substance-use disorder.
- Continuity fee payments to providers or clinics.
- Tele-behavioral health services and the construction to permit spaces for counseling and administration of medication.
- HIPPAA-compliant technology for data sharing with clinicians.
- The bill would also provide an opportunity to work with Health and Human Services to issue draft guidance with technical assistance, recommendations, and best practices regarding pharmacy-based addiction treatment.
Please take the time to personalize the letter by providing additional information about your practice and the patients you care for. If appropriate, highlight how your practice is caring for patients suffering from opioid/substance-use disorder.
Pharmacists across the country are working under extraordinary circumstances to improve patient outcomes through team-based models of care. It is vital that Congress hears about your important work. Please also consider inviting your elected officials to visit your practice setting so they can see for themselves the value clinical pharmacists bring to the health care delivery team!
