Ask Members of Congress to Pass the Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act!

Following the November 3 elections, Congress will return to Washington to consider year-end legislation. As lawmakers determine which priorities will be included in a year-end package, they need to hear from you.

Please contact your members of Congress and urge them to cosponsor and support inclusion of the bipartisan Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act (H.R. 2028/S. 942) in any year-end legislative package.

Background

The Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) H.R. 2028/ S.942 Act would allow eligible physicians and dentists in accredited internship and residency programs to defer interest accrual on their federal student loans during required postgraduate training.

Medical and dental school graduates face some of the highest educational debt burdens of any profession, often exceeding $200,000. During residency, physicians earn modest salaries while completing several years of required clinical training. Although existing deferment and forbearance options can temporarily pause loan payments, interest may continue to accrue, adding to physicians’ debt before they enter practice.

Recent changes to federal student loan policy have made this issue even more urgent. Since July 1, 2026, new federal borrowing limits have taken effect for graduate and professional students, and Graduate PLUS loans are no longer available to new borrowers. These changes may limit federal financing options for future medical and dental students.”

By deferring interest accrual during residency, the REDI Act would help to reduce educational debt burdens.

Action Requested: Please email your members of Congress and urge them to cosponsor and support including the bipartisan Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act (H.R. 2028/S. 942) in any end-of-year legislative package.
