New in the Legislative Action Center: Updated Mandatory Spay/Neuter Talking Points
April 21, 2023 by AKC Government Relations

States and communities across the country are deliberating over how to address animal control, shelter population, and other similar concerns – and some are considering mandatory spay/neuter as a possible solution.

In recent months, AKC Government Relations has observed an uptick in mandatory spay/neuter proposals at the local and county level. Wichita, Kansas, and Kern County, California are among the most recent communities to have these proposals.

In Illinois, a State Representative introduced a bill earlier this year calling for mandatory sterilization of any breeding dog that tested positive for any kind of genetic defect – regardless of how minor.

AKC Government Relations is pleased to help clubs, breeders, and hobbyists communicate with lawmakers on this issue with our updated, shareable handout with talking points on why mandatory spay/neuter is ineffective.

This handout provides basic bullet points outlining the impact these proposals have on dogs, responsible owners, and communities and can be found in the mandatory spay/neuter key issue page and the legislative toolbox in the AKC Legislative Action Center.

Be sure to visit the Legislative Action Center at www.akcgr.org and click on the “Key Issues” and legislative toolbox tabs to view our talking points and resources on a broad range of canine legislation issues.
