The right to a fair trial is one of the foundations of our legal system, and we should do everything we can to ensure all Alabamians have equal representation. SB 83 is a good bill that would help improve the indigent defense system in Alabama.
SB 83, sponsored by Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, would establish a voluntary indigent defense advisory board in each judicial circuit. These boards would oversee indigent defense processes throughout the state. This bill also would increase the rates at which defenders are paid, depending on the severity of the charge.
This bill has passed the Senate and both the Judiciary and House Ways and Means committees. It could come before the full House for a vote as early as Tuesday, April 2. It’s important for your representative to hear from you today about your support for this legislation.
Please reach out to your representative to let them know that you’re a registered voter in their district who supports this bill.
