Finish the job: Eliminate Alabama's state grocery tax!
The momentum to untax groceries in Alabama was undeniable in 2023, when the Legislature passed a law that eventually will reduce the state sales tax on groceries by half. Now we need to keep building on that momentum and push lawmakers to eliminate the state grocery tax for good.

Arise was elated to see the state's 4% state sales tax on groceries drop to 3% last year. But legislators have indicated that education revenue growth was not enough for the next planned reduction (from 3% to 2%) to proceed this year under the new law.

Urge your lawmakers to stay on top of this issue and continue to repeal the state sales tax on groceries!

Ending the state grocery tax would make it easier for people across our state to make ends meet. It would mean a tax cut of about $300 a year for many Alabama families. And it would be significant progress toward Arise’s goal of a more humane, equitable and sustainable tax system in Alabama.
