SB 91, sponsored by Sen. Linda Coleman-Madison, D-Birmingham, will be deliberated in the Finance and Taxation General Fund committee on Wednesday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m. This bill would provide significant dedicated funding for transit via a $5 fee on new car tag renewals. This would provide about $25 million annually for public transportation. Together with federal matching grants, this amount could allow Alabama to invest up to $125 million in public transportation every year.
Email your senator today and urge them to provide funding for public transit! The bill is assigned to the Senate Finance and Taxation General Fund Committee, but we need your voice to motivate your senator to move it forward and through the Senate.
Many Alabama seniors, people with disabilities, and people with low incomes need public transit to go to work, get to the doctor and run essential errands. And a reliable public transportation system helps workers find and keep stable employment.
Alabama’s economy won’t reach its full potential without needed investments in public goods. It’s time for our state to fund public transportation and ensure every Alabamian can stay connected to economic and civic life.
Your senator needs to hear from you that you support SB 91, and they should, too. Email your senator now about this important investment in a better Alabama.
