Say NO to new barriers to food and health care for struggling Alabamians
Every Alabamian needs groceries and health care to keep their families well. But two bills pending in the Senate would add new barriers to make it harder for families with low incomes to get the health care and food assistance they need to thrive.

Take a moment now and urge your senator to vote NO on both of these harmful bills.

SB 245 and SB 246, both sponsored by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, would make life more difficult for struggling Alabamians in numerous ways. These bills would delay Medicaid coverage for expecting moms with low incomes and would delay hospital coverage for people with medical crises. The bills would deny food assistance to many seniors and other Alabamians with small savings accounts to help cover funeral expenses or other needs. And the bills would impose new complicated and burdensome paperwork requirements for people participating in Medicaid or receiving food assistance under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Earlier this session, the House and Senate overwhelmingly passed bills to help ensure that Medicaid coverage would be available as quickly as possible to pregnant women with low incomes. But these proposed bills would prohibit this important reform, as well as many other potential efficiencies to cut red tape and save on administrative costs.

Alabama can’t afford to move backward on ensuring that families have the food and health care they need to survive and thrive. Please email your senator and ask them to vote NO on SB 245 and SB 246.
