Alabama’s parole decisions should rely on common sense, not overly punitive revocation rules. HB 437 by Rep. Laura Hall, D-Huntsville, would provide judges more discretion in parole revocation decisions when they find the petitioner poses no risk to public safety. Under the state’s current system, many Alabamians have their parole revoked for reasons unrelated to public safety, including for minor technical violations such as missing a meeting.

Alabama’s parole system should protect the public while also supporting Alabamians who are rebuilding their lives in the reentry process. HB 437 would allow judges to make decisions about parole revocation based on the facts of an individual’s situation, not rigid, inflexible requirements. This would be a sensible step toward a more functional parole system for everyone in our state.
