How to Navigate the Legislative Action Center
October 15, 2023 by Jill Tighe, Manager of Grassroots Advocacy & Engagement

AOTA's Legislative Action Center is your home for advocating directly with your policymakers. To get here, remember the shortcut, www.aota.org/takeaction. This will take you to the home page of AOTA's Legislative Action Center where you will find all of the current advocacy campaigns created for you by AOTA's Federal Affairs Department.

There are four sections of AOTA's Legislative Action Center. Active Campaigns, Sign Up for Alerts, Find Legislation, and Find Officials.

The Active Campaigns

Campaigns on AOTA's LAC are opportunities for you to contact your legislators on a range of topics. AOTA's Federal Affairs staff write a short brief on the issue, and draft a letter for you to send to your legislators. AOTA Federal Affairs Staff pride ourselves on creating these letters and providing them as fully editable drafts. You as an advocate are encouraged to use your own words to raise your own voice on any issue that may be important to you. Advocates can choose the campaign that speaks to them, or you are able to use the "Write Your Own Letter" Campaign to start from scratch.

Campaigns are the grey buttons on the front page of AOTA's LAC that - when clicked on - will lead to a breakdown of the issue and a place for you to enter your address to be matched with your legislators so you can view AOTA's prewritten but fully editable letter.

Sign Up For Alerts

Use this box to subscribe to AOTA's Legislative Action Center Mailing list. We use this mailing list to share breaking news, Hill Day announcements, and prompt advocates to take action when appropriate. We will not sell or share your information and we promise not to inundate your inbox with emails.

Find Legislation

There are two parts to this section. First, there's the Keyword search box. Use this box to search for keywords or specific phrases in any legislation that has been introduced in the current Congress. Second, there's the "View Key Legislation," link. Use the "View Key Legislation," link to view some of the legislation that AOTA is currently highlighting.  You can also access this list directly using www.AOTA.org/Legislation. Please note, that list is not exhaustive when it comes to legislation that we are tracking. If you have questions about legislation that isn't featured under that link, please contact us at ASKFAD@aota.org.

Find Officials

To be matched with your legislators, please enter your home address or the address at which you are registered to vote/pay taxes. This is to ensure you are contacting the legislators who represent you in Congress. When the search returns your list of legislators, you can click their name - it is a hyperlink - next to the official’s picture to see more information. about them. That information will include sections labeled, "Contact," "Personal," "Political," and "Staff" . Use these sections to learn more about your legislators.  As an advocate, you can also refer to the “Key Committees” list available on AOTA.org (https://www.aota.org/advocacy/hill-day/learn-more-about-key-senate-and-house-committees) to learn more about the Congressional committees your legislators may belong to.

Thank you for reading and happy advocating!
