Policy makers in Washington are focusing more and more on the importance of providing comprehensive care after the birth of a new child. Some legislation, like the Healthy Moms and Babies Act (H.R. 4605/ S. 948) includes occupational therapy practitioners among the professionals who can provide postpartum services through new healthcare benefits created by the bill. Other legislation, such as the Optimizing Postpartum Outcomes Act (H.R. 2480), does not currently include occupational therapy practitioners among the professionals who can provide pelvic health services highlighted in the bill, in order to support better postpartum outcomes. Rather than oppose important legislation such as H.R. 2480, we hope you will use this opportunity to help educate policymakers about the important role of occupational therapy practitioners in providing pelvic health services, as well as other postpartum services. This is an opportunity to use your expertise to educate policymakers and help to include occupational therapy in future legislation.
