Cuyahoga County is home to a vibrant ecosystem of arts and culture organizations, creative businesses, and individual artists. In 2020, this important economic engine in northeast Ohio has been put at risk by the public health crisis and compounding recession caused by COVID-19. Today, we are overjoyed to share that Cuyahoga County leadership has made an allocation of $4 million in dedicated CARES funding for the arts and culture sector.

Northeast Ohio’s vibrant arts scene plays an important role in the economic, educational, recreational and cultural vitality of our community. It generates more than $1.3 billion annually in industry sales, and supports more than 10,000 employees. As of May 2020, the arts and culture sector is reporting 44% unemployment and rising numbers of furloughs, layoffs, and pay cuts. A recent study by Ohio Citizens for the Arts and others across the state showed that 19% of Ohio arts and cultural organizations remain closed, while others have pivoted toward digital or recorded programming.
The CARES Act was passed by Congress in March 2020 to help all of us during the pandemic and recession. It included funding for the Paycheck Protection Program, unemployment benefits, and other aid measures. The arts and culture sector has been less able to access unemployment benefits because of how common gig or contract work is, and PPP funding has been similarly hard to access for small organizations. Many arts and cultural organizations have been unable to pivot to all-digital or all-distanced programming, including the majority of performing arts organizations and live arts venues. A $4 million allocation from the county’s CARES Act funding to the arts and culture sector can help to even the scale, and provide resources to those who have weathered 2020 thus far with little assistance.
Thank Cuyahoga County leadership and share how arts and culture has impacted your life. The arts and culture sector in northeast Ohio has the economic capability to move our region forward, and the community reach to keep us connected in these trying times. Thank you for your support, and for demonstrating your support to county leadership.
