Increase NEA Funding!
UPDATE:  On March 18, President Trump released his FY 2020 budget recommending the elimination of the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities and other cultural agencies.  This is the third time the president's budget has recommended elimination of the agencies.  The U.S. Congress rejected this misguided proposal for both FY 2018 and FY 2019, but we need arts advocates across the nation to call on their members of Congress to reject it yet again.

In January 2019, the 116th Congress began with a new legislative agenda and dynamic due to the change in leadership in the U.S. House. Appropriators have begun the cycle for the fiscal year (FY) 2020 appropriations process. In both FY 2018 and FY 2019, the Trump administration sought to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA); however, Congress strongly rejected that proposal on a bipartisan basis both years, and actually increased NEA funding in both FY 2018 and FY 2019.

On February 26th, the  House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, which oversees the funding for the NEA and many other federal cultural agencies, held a public witness hearing where Americans for the Arts President and CEO Robert L. Lynch testified and asked the Subcommittee to increase funding for the NEA in FY 2020 to a level of $167.5 million.

The House Subcommittee is now led by Representatives Betty McCollum (D-MN) and David Joyce (R-OH) and the Senate Interior Appropriations Subcommittee is led by Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Tom Udall (D-NM).

Representative Chellie Pingree (D-ME) is leading the NEA funding request letter in the House, and Sen. Tom Udall is leading the NEA funding request letter in the Senate. Both letters propose that the NEA should be funded at $167.5 million for FY 2020
