Unless Congress acts, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services intends in 2022 to implement to the fullest extent possible the Medicare Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) Program for advanced diagnostic imaging.
ASNC supports the use of AUC for advanced diagnostic imaging tests, but an overly prescriptive and complex program that CMS has struggled for nearly seven years to implement is not the answer.
Since the law was enacted in 2014, new Medicare payment and delivery models that hold clinicians accountable for health care resource use have evolved. When coupled with repeated implementation delays, the AUC Program is now outdated and should be repealed and existing Medicare quality improvement programs should be leveraged to encourage the consultation of AUC for advanced diagnostic imaging.
You can help deliver the message to your members Congress that the Medicare AUC Program is a complicated, outdated, administratively burdensome and costly mandate that should be repealed.
