Two Urgent Actions: Recognize Public Health as a Professional Degree
The U.S. Department of Education has released its proposed rule to implement new federal student loan limits under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).  The proposal excludes public health from the definition of a "professional degree," which will place MPH's and DrPH's in the lower federal loan limit bracket.

By doing so, the Department has unlawfully changed the definition of “professional degree." This proposal disregards decades of statutory language, federal policy, and workforce practice that clearly recognize MPHs and DrPHs "professional degrees." This exclusion threatens public health education, undermines the workforce pipeline, and weakens our nation’s ability to respond to current and future health challenges. Read more about this topic in a new editorial piece in the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) by ASPPH's President & CEO, Laura Magaña.

Your voice is critical, now more than ever. Here's what you can do to speak up for public health:

We urge all members and partners to submit a public comment to the Department of Education expressing concern with this proposed rule and calling for public health to be explicitly included in the definition of a professional degree. Personalized comments help demonstrate the real-world harm of this proposal and reinforce the breadth and importance of public health education nationwide.

1. Submit your comment to the Department of Education by March 2nd and help ensure public health is recognized for what it is: a vital professional discipline essential to the health of our communities. We urge you to use ASPPH's letter as a template and use our suggested guidelines to tailor your letter to demonstrate impact on your institution and community.

2. Once you submit your comment letter to the Department, we also encourage you to notify your Senators and Member of Congress using this form.
