As written, House Bill 218 and Senate Bill 175, or the SAVE Act, will allow advanced practice registered nurses to order, perform, supervise and interpret diagnostic studies. The ASRT has submitted a letter of recommendation to legislators asking them to amend the language to explicitly exclude procedures using medical imaging and radiation therapy. Citizens in North Carolina are being asked to do the same. This amended language to the current legislative text will maintain the defined scope of practice for advanced practice registered nurses without allowing them to order, perform, supervise or interpret medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures that they are not adequately educated and clinically competent to perform, supervise or interpret. Medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals devote significant time and money to maintain education and professional standards in medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures. Although advanced practice registered nurses may have preliminary education in imaging, they are not required to show appropriate competencies to perform or supervise medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures.
