Overview of the Series
Building on the American Heritage is the second installment of David Barton’s American Heritage teaching series. In it, Barton—alongside former Texas legislator Rick Green—examines America’s founding documents, early leaders, and historical practices to argue that the United States was shaped by moral, religious, and constitutional principles that are often overlooked in modern education.
Week 1 – Preserving America’s Heritage
Episode 1: Preserving America’s Heritage
Core Focus
This session introduces the idea that historical memory matters, and that losing an accurate understanding of America’s past affects national identity, governance, and civic responsibility.
Key Themes
- The importance of historical documentation and original source materials
- Differences between primary sources (founders’ writings, early laws, proclamations) and later historical reinterpretations
- How history has been revised or selectively taught in modern education
- The role of citizens in preserving historical truth
Major Points
- Early Americans believed history should transmit moral lessons, not just facts
- Removal of religious and moral references from history textbooks represents reinterpretation, not neutrality
- Forgetting foundational principles leads to instability in law and culture
Takeaway
A nation that forgets its origins loses direction. Preserving accurate history is presented as a civic responsibility.
Week 2 – Foundations of American Government
Episode 2: Foundations of American Government
Core Focus
This lesson examines where America’s system of government came from and what ideas shaped the Constitution.
Key Themes
- Biblical, classical, and Enlightenment influences on the Founders
- The concept of limited government
- Natural law and inalienable rights
- Self‑government and virtue
Major Points
- Many Founders believed moral self‑restraint was necessary for liberty
- Rights were understood as coming from God, not government
- The Constitution presumes a morally educated citizenry
Takeaway
American government was designed to limit power, not centralize it, and depends on the character of the people for success.
Week 3 – The Role of Government
Episode 3: The Role of Government
Core Focus
This session clarifies what government is—and is not—intended to do according to America’s founding philosophy.
Key Themes
- Protection of life, liberty, and property
- Difference between rights and entitlements
- Subsidiarity (handling problems at the lowest appropriate level)
- Dangers of government overreach
Major Points
- Government’s purpose is protection, not provision
- Families, churches, and communities historically met many social needs
- Centralized power was one of the Founders’ greatest fears
Takeaway
A healthy society depends on strong communities and limited government authority.
Week 4 – Demystifying the Judicial System
Episode 4: Demystifying the Judicial System
Core Focus
This lesson explains how the judicial branch was originally designed to function and how it has changed over time.
Key Themes
- Original role of judges as interpreters, not lawmakers
- Judicial review vs. judicial supremacy
- Historical limits on court authority
- The rise of activist jurisprudence
Major Points
- Early judges relied heavily on precedent and moral law
- Courts were never meant to create social policy
- The Constitution placed ultimate authority with the people
Takeaway
Understanding judicial boundaries is essential to maintaining constitutional balance.
Week 5 – America’s Lost Heroes: African American Patriots
Episode 5: America’s Lost Heroes: African American Patriots
Core Focus
This session highlights African American contributions to America’s founding and development that are often excluded from mainstream history.
Key Themes
- Black patriots in the Revolutionary War
- Christian faith among early Black leaders
- Opposition to slavery from America’s beginning
- The role of faith in early civil rights advocacy
Major Points
- Thousands of African Americans fought for independence
- Early abolition efforts predate modern civil rights movements
- Christianity played a major role in Black American leadership and reform
Takeaway
America’s heritage includes diverse voices united by shared ideals of liberty and faith.
Week 6 – Remarkable Young Americans
Episode 6: Remarkable Young Americans
Core Focus
The final session emphasizes the influence of youth in American history and challenges modern assumptions about age and leadership.
Key Themes
- Young Founders and leaders (many under 30)
- Early responsibility and education
- Moral training in youth
- Intergenerational influence
Major Points
- Numerous signers of key documents were young adults
- Early education emphasized character and leadership
- Youth were expected to engage in public life and service
Takeaway
Age does not limit impact; preparation and character determine leadership.
