Protect Freedom to Move for All

Everyone deserves the freedom to move safely and securely—regardless of immigration or citizenship status.

But today, that freedom is under threat. Our immigration system is routinely violating constitutional rights—denying people due process, legal representation, and the basic dignity of fair hearings.

We request organizations and individuals to sign onto the attached statement on Freedom to Move and Immigration and contact their elected officials. Because America Walks is an organization focused on transportation, we particularly urge those in transportation and related fields to raise their voices at this time. For more information, we invite you to read this blog post from America Walks

America Walks will share this statement with elected officials.  We urge signers to encourage others to sign, to share this statement with their elected officials and with their networks. Only by collectively raising our voices can we protect the constitutional rights to freedom of movement that are currently threatened.

Petition Text

Statement on Freedom to Move and Immigration

  • As organizations and individuals who care about transportation and people’s freedom to move, we want to respond to actions taken toward immigrants by the current Administration.
  • We want to affirm that every individual has the right to move in public spaces with dignity and without fear of unreasonable seizure.
  • The environment created by unlawfully detaining and jailing U.S. residents  takes away the freedom to move of all those who fear being stopped for improper reasons
  • Every individual in the United States, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, is entitled to the protection of the U.S. Constitution, which explicitly extends to every person in the U.S. the right to due process.
  • When any individual is denied due process then the due process rights of all of us are threatened. Without a meaningful opportunity to be heard by a neutral and impartial court, then the power of the government is unchecked.
  • Accordingly, we urge all to publicly defend the fundamental right, supported by the U.S. Constitution, for U.S. residents to freely move in all public spaces without fear of unlawfully being seized and jailed.
