Tell Legislators that New Jersey residents need affordable houses, not tax increases.
Real Estate agents are on the front lines of the home buying and selling journey. Agents and brokers know the challenges facing homebuyers in New Jersey – lack of affordable housing. Raising taxes on homes and driving up the cost to buy a house is the wrong move. It is already really expensive to purchase a house in NJ, the government shouldn’t make it harder.
Now is not the time for price hikes.
As part of his 2026 budget proposal, Governor Murphy proposed doubling the so called “mansion tax” on homes costing $1M from 1 percent to 2 percent and an increase to 3 percent on homes over $2M. This additional tax would result in doubling the fee on homes in the $1-2M range and tripling the tax on homes over $2M.
In New Jersey, a $1 million home is becoming more common, and this tax will make homeownership for our children, young families, and families moving to New Jersey much more expensive. It will drive people out of New Jersey and make New Jersey a less affordable place to live and stay.
