Nearly 50 Democrats from both chambers of Congress sent a letter February 9 to Secretary of Transportation Buttigieg seeking to make climate change a priority in transportation policy. Specifically, they want to “urgently restore the national performance measure on carbon pollution from tailpipe greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on the National Highway System (the “GHG measure”) that the Trump Administration repealed in 2018.” The letter also urges the Secretary to start early “to improve the methods and procedures for accounting for the climate and environmental justice impacts of our transportation decisions and investments.” It is expected that the Biden Administration will in the very near future propose legislation and regulations that address the issues raised in the letter.
