House Transportation Committee Leaders Articulate Priorities for Next Highway Bill

On February 24, 2021, Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and Ranking Member Sam Graves (R-MO) laid out their priorities for reauthorizing the FAST Act in remarks before the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ Washington Briefing event. Rep. DeFazio said his legislation will be a “21st century infrastructure bill… that will get done this year before October 1.” Speaking directly to the heads of the state transportation agencies, he said, “reporting on carbon emissions will certainly be in this bill and setting targets for moving forward.” Rep. Graves used the forum to explain his vehicle miles traveled (VMT) proposal that “could be done right now with the technology we have.” Links to these short 10-minute presentations can be found here and here
