The Autism Societies of California including 5 independent affiliates of the Autism Society of America: Autism Society Inland Empire, Autism Society Los Angeles, Autism Society San Diego, Autism Society San Francisco Bay Area, and Autism Society Ventura County, strongly opposes several proposals in the Governor's May revised state budget that would significantly reduce or eliminate critical disability services relied upon by individuals with Autism and their families.
Proposed cuts include reductions or structural changes to the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program, Health and Safety Waiver Assistance, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) University, Self-Determination Program supports, and the reversal of planned changes to Medi-Cal asset limits. These programs are foundational to ensuring safety, independence, and dignity for people with Autism and other developmental disabilities across California.
Key Concerns Include:
- In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS): Any reduction in IHSS would diminish in-home care options and increase caregiver strain, risking the health and safety of individuals with Autism.
- Health and Safety Waiver Assistance: Eliminating or restricting this support would leave families without emergency funding needed for essential adaptations and services.
- DDS University: Cutting training programs weakens our ability to build a well-prepared workforce to serve the developmental disabilities community.
- Self-Determination Program Support: Reducing infrastructure for this innovative program undermines person-centered planning and individual choice.
- Medi-Cal Asset Limits: Stalling the phase-out of outdated asset tests locks people with disabilities into poverty and penalizes efforts to achieve basic financial security.
Please use this Action Alert to easily message your State Legislators to educate them on the importance of these programs and urge them to oppose these cuts.
