The crash happened on Route 40, near Mine Fork Road, east of Salyersville.

First responders at the scene told WKYT they believed the bus had overcorrected on a turn and ended up going over the road and into a ditch.

School officials say at least 18 students were on the bus. Magoffin County Judge-Executive Matt Wireman says an initial report of 21 students by the fire chief was inaccurate.

Wireman says all the students and the driver were taken from the scene to area hospitals. We’re told three people, the driver and two students, were taken from the scene by helicopter.

The driver is in critical condition. Several of the students are in serious to critical condition.

We did some checking with the Kentucky State Police database of all traffic collisions in Kentucky. In the past decade, there have been seven accidents along that same stretch of Kentucky 40.

One person was killed in a single-vehicle accident in 2017. State Police noted fog in the area at the time of that accident.

In 2013 and 2014, there were accidents noted as vehicles running off the roadway and down an embankment. Someone was injured in one of those two accidents.
