The Fund Maryland 988 Campaign needs your help to strengthen suicide prevention and mental health care for all Marylanders.

Everyone deserves equitable, timely, and effective mental health and substance use services, including crisis services. Maryland needs to invest in its network of local crisis call centers to make sure people who are struggling can get care when and where they need it. This is especially important with the July 2022 launch of the new national 988 hotline for suicide prevention and behavioral health crisis response.

We are calling on Maryland legislators to support legislation to:

Establish 988 as Maryland’s behavioral health crisis hotline for mental health and substance use crises;
Establish a state fund to invest in 24/7 call centers, mobile crisis teams, crisis stabilization centers, and related crisis response services; and
Allocate an initial $10 million to the fund to ensure that call centers are adequately staffed and available 24/7.

The Fund Maryland 988 Campaign is calling on legislators to establish 988 as Maryland’s behavioral health crisis hotline for mental health and substance use crises – and to provide dedicated funding to make sure it meets the need throughout the state. Maryland, along with the rest of the country, will transition to a new suicide prevention and behavioral health crisis hotline number, 988. As this new hotline number launches, we must invest in call centers to ensure our system can meet the needs of all Marylanders. Sustained investments in 988 and crisis services can reduce our over-reliance on emergency rooms and law enforcement while improving the care people receive.
