Recently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved bans on traditional tackle on several National Wildlife Refuges. These actions lacked sound scientific evidence, setting a concerning precedent. Fortunately, there’s a bill working its way through Congress that could help stop these unwarranted bans.

Officially known as the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act, this bill would prohibit federal land management agencies from arbitrarily banning the use of traditional lead tackle on public lands and waters. It would support science-based management and ensure that state fish and wildlife agencies are given the proper authority to inform these decisions.

🚨 The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote this week, so don’t delay! Tell Congress to vote “YES” on the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act today! 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐊 𝐈𝐍 𝐁𝐈𝐎

Atlantic herring are a critical food source for striped bass, bluefin tuna, and many other recreationally important species. Unfortunately, the commercial midwater trawling fleet, which accounts for most herring landings, could be outcompeting those predators for food and creating conflicts with other user groups who rely on herring availability in nearshore areas.

Recently, ASA’s Atlantic Fisheries Policy Director, Michael Waine, joined @vikingyachtcompany to explore onboard technology safety features that have meaningful benefits in conserving the endangered North Atlantic right whale. Instead of limiting fishing and boating along the entire East Coast for six months each year, tools such as infrared cameras, passive acoustic monitoring, and forward-facing sonar can be used today to reduce strike risk to right whales.
