Last week two resolutions were signed into law that overturned California’s attempt to mandate electric vehicle sales. NACS member Bill Kent, owner of The Kent Companies, was at the White House when President Trump signed the resolutions. The president asked Kent to share a few remarks: "I’m in the convenience store and petroleum marketing business, and what this does is it gives us freedom. It gives the consumers freedom to pick what kind of car they want...More importantly, it gives us the ability to plan going forward because with mandates, we were forced to have to look at putting in an infrastructure that frankly is extremely expensive and doesn’t give you any return. So, this allows us to free up our companies to invest in what people want and the cars they want," said Kent. NACS fought for the mandate to be overturned and challenged California’s rule in the courts along with other groups. In December 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court granted a petition filed by NACS and its coalition partners in a case challenging the state of California’s Advanced Clean Cars I rule. In February 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed with the NACS position and declined to pause further action in the case, which is expected to have a decision later in 2025.

Today, the NACS Foundation launched the Lisa Dell’Alba Convenience Industry Leadership Scholarship. “There was no part of Lisa that wasn’t about giving back. She was more than passionate about our industry—she was passionate about the people. She led by example and inspired and motivated so many people,” said NACS President & CEO Henry Armour. The scholarship supports emerging industry leaders who demonstrate leadership potential and a passion for developing others within their organization and/or the greater convenience and fuel retailing industry. “This is a special industry, and it’s because of the people in it. We share with each other, and we care about each other. I’ve found my tribe. I don’t think of them as ‘my industry friends’. I think of them as ‘my best friends’,” Lisa told NACS in 2024. The NACS Foundation invites U.S.-based retailers and suppliers to nominate their local hometown heroes for the inaugural First Responder of the Year award. The First Responder of the Year Award recognizes the dedication, courage and service of first responders who go above and beyond to protect and support their communities. Presented on behalf of the convenience store industry and the NACS Foundation, this award highlights the shared commitment of responders and suppliers to honor those who serve 24/7. This year, we will recognize outstanding first responder(s)—especially those who played a critical role in disaster response during Hurricane Helene and the L.A. wildfires—on 24/7 Day (July 24). Contact Kevin O'Connell, executive director of the NACS Foundation, at koconnell@convenience.org for more information and visit https://lnkd.in/eSfCstxV to nominate someone you know who has risen to the occasion for their community.
