SPELLERS
Please join us Sunday April 30th, 10am to noon, for a private screening of SPELLERS, a documentary about non-speaking and minimially verbal individuals with autism who use a form of communication called "Spelling to Communicate" or S2C. By providing an intimate look at the lives of the individuals and families using this method of communication, the film challenges our assumptions about non speaking autistic people, especially widespread assumptions regarding intellectual capacity. Spellers just won 'Best Documentary' at the Phoenix Film Festival. It is not currently publicly available outside of private screenings and upcoming film festivals.
Our family has been using S2C for the last few years and it has transformed our understanding of our son and has given him a chance to share his needs, thoughts, and feelings with us. We are hoping this film screening will inspire people to challenge their assumptions about people with minimally verbal or non-speaking autism and learn more about this alternative method of communication. This method is not without controversy. We will explore these controversies in a discussion and Q & A after the film. We look forward to open dialogue. All viewpoints are welcome.
Individuals needing to accommodate sensory needs by walking, pacing, vocalizing, etc.. are fully welcome to attend. The theater is much larger than the number of tickets available, so there will be room to move around.
I am hosting this screening entirely in my personal capacity as a parent of a child with autism and the screening and any related content or discussion have no relationship to any current or former employers or academic affiliations.

About the film
Inspired by the book Underestimated, the new full-length documentary SPELLERS challenges conventional wisdom regarding a group relegated to society’s margins: nonspeakers with autism, who most “experts” believe are cognitively disabled. As the film opening asks, “What if we’ve been wrong…about every single one of them?” SPELLERS answers that question, in convincing fashion, through the stories of eight nonspeakers—Aydan, Evan, Sid, Maddie, Jamie, Vince, Cade, and Elizabeth—who all found their voice through the miraculous process of using a letterboard to communicate their thoughts and feelings. As Jamie explains, “we think, feel, and learn just like everyone else.”
