REMARKS FROM LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR ARUNA MILLER
PANEL DISCUSSION | IMPROVING SERVICES FOR
CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIES
Over the past decade, Maryland has seen a marked decline in the
availability of mental health and substance use services for younger
Marylanders and a decrease in coordination across the state agencies
serving them. At the same time, the need for these services has increased
exponentially, and the results have been devastating. Maryland’s 46%
increase in suicide-related emergency department visits among youth is a
sobering reminder of what is at stake if we fail to act quickly and decisively
to rebuild a holistic system of services, supports, and opportunity for
children, youth, and families.
During this year’s panel, MHAMD board members Jane Walker and
Edgar Wiggins will moderated a conversation with the leaders who are
championing efforts to restore and improve Maryland’s system of care.
