Pro-life Hyde Protections in Latest Spending Bill Ensure Taxpayers Won’t Be Forced to Fund Abortion on Demand Until Birth
Washington, D.C. – Last night in a defeat for pro-abortion Democrats, the U.S. House passed an omnibus spending bill that includes the Hyde Amendment and other longstanding policies that prevent taxpayer funding of abortion on demand. The bill is expected to pass the Senate soon after. The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) responded in a statement:
“Pro-abortion Democrats’ efforts to force taxpayers to fund abortion on demand until birth are deeply unpopular with the majority of Americans. The Hyde family of pro-life policies that keep taxpayers out of the abortion business has had bipartisan support for over 40 years, with the original Hyde Amendment itself saving 2.5 million lives. These spending bills should never have reached the floor without them.
“We are grateful to pro-life appropriators, especially House Ranking Members Kay Granger and Tom Cole, as well as Senate Vice Chairman Richard Shelby, and all our allies in Congress who fought to preserve vital Hyde protections and made them non-negotiable while exposing the radical Biden-Pelosi-Schumer abortion agenda over the last year. We remain vigilant against further anti-life attacks and will hold pro-abortion extremists accountable at the ballot box.”
Last week H.R. 3755, better known as the Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act, failed to pass in the Senate. Backed by the Biden administration, this legislation would effectively codify a right to abortion on demand until birth into federal law and nullify pro-life laws enacted by democratically elected legislators in states across the country. SBA List announced that it would score the vote and issued a memo detailing the bill’s extreme provisions. In addition, SBA List’s research arm Charlotte Lozier Institute has provided expert legal analysis of the legislation.
