Using ASA’s guide to navigate the Federal Manufacturer’s Excise Tax 🎣

Through the funds paid into the Sport Fish Restoration (SFR) Program, sportfishing businesses, along with their state and federal fisheries partners, have built a strong industry and brighter future for recreational fishing in America.

Every lake or stream that has been restored, every fish that has been stocked and every ramp that has been built using SFR funds provides another opportunity for more anglers to fish more often – and encourages greater fishing tackle sales. The formula could not be simpler: invest in the resource, improve your bottom line.

The Wisconsin Conservation Congress and Department of Natural Resources recently announced their 2024 spring hearing questionnaire, an annual opportunity for anglers to weigh-in on proposed regulations and rule changes.

Two concerning questions have landed on the survey this year, and we need your input to ensure anglers’ voices are heard ⬇️⬇️⬇️

▪️ “22. Would you support banning the use of live scopes, and similar 360° imaging electronics in all Wisconsin waters?”

▪️ “49. Would you support a commercial fishery for lake trout in Wisconsin waters of Lake Michigan?”

Question #22 could lead to future restrictions that would prevent anglers from using forward-facing sonar electronics, overriding traditional fisheries management tools like bag limits and seasons without clear scientific justification.

Question #49 could lead to rules that would allow commercial fishermen to harvest and sell lake trout, even if they are raised and stocked at state hatcheries funded by your license purchases.

Yesterday, Members of the House of Representatives came together in a bipartisan fashion to pass the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act.

“The EXPLORE Act takes much-needed measures to improve access to fishing on America’s federal lands and waters,” said Mike Leonard, Vice President of Government Affairs at ASA. “By making outdoor recreation a priority, Congress has shown its support for America’s 54.5 million anglers and the $148 billion sportfishing economy they support.”

The sportfishing community thanks Chairman @repwesterman , Ranking Member @repraulgrijalva , and the 50 additional bipartisan cosponsors for their leadership on this important legislation.

A bill that would increase outdoor recreation opportunities - including fishing - on federal lands is coming up for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives. Called the EXPLORE Act, this bill is good news for America’s anglers.

This comprehensive package contains dozens of provisions, ranging from improving visitation data to expanding broadband service at park sites to addressing the spread of aquatic invasive species.

Federal lands play an important role in providing recreational fishing opportunities. This legislative package will modernize and enhance the management of, and access to, our nation’s public lands.
