State Budget Deadlock Continues To Harm Social Service Organizations

(CBS) -- The head of United Way in Chicago says the continuing budget impasse in Springfield has made this a very challenging—and painful—year for the kind of social service agencies they help to fund.

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports.

Wendy DuBoe, President and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, said things were bad last year without a state budget. This year, with the crisis ongoing, things are even worse for non-profit groups helping those in need.

A million clients of the social services agencies her organization helps fund have lost services. Half the agencies have blown through their cash reserves, she says.

Corporate and individual donors are trying to give more, but they cannot come close to making up for the lack of state funding, which is the bulk of human services spending in the state, DuBoe says.

"There's an enormous amount of donor fatigue out there," she says.

DuBoe and the heads of social services agencies talk about the growing crisis on "At Issue," which airs 9:30 p.m. Sunday on WBBM Newsradio.
